I am seeking a copy of the Kentucky Derby on NBC. Family emergency kept me from recording or seeing it. If there is a known copy out there, I would like to know as I am a great fan.

I don't need to spring for TiVo Maryanne -- I can just come over to your house and watch it. I should have thought to call you -- we could have watched it over the phone -- and that poor old man. I'm sure his health is why it took them fifteen minutes to get to the winners circle.

I love this entry.

I watched the Derby holed up in a Best Western motel room in Murphy, NC, while a spring storm pounded on the window. It was incredibly exciting and moving. And I agree about the elderly owner. I was sure they were wheeling him off to an ambulance instead of the winners circle!

And, hey. Spring for the TiVo already.

Heh, TiVO lust strikes Living Small! Tune in a few months down the road to find out if our principled blogger stays strong or caves. We already know about those frilly sheets, remember. Any bets?

I really enjoyed the Derby story. Being a native Californian, the Derby is not really a part of our consciousness. In fact just the other day a client of mine, who hails from Louisville (I'm a hairdresser, but have BA in Women's Studies and English Lit.) asked me if I knew "what tomorrow was." I looked at him blankly and he remarked, "Oh you Californians." All of a sudden I remembered his reminisces of home and I said, "The Kentucky Derby?" I guess I got a gold star. :)

Ooh -- you have it on TiVo? I am so jealous. I never even thought about TiVo and racing .... Darn. Another reason to have to fend off my desire for TiVo ...

That final turn gets me too, in the same way that a very particular space between notes in my alma mater gets me, and strangely too in the same way that the swooping opening shots of classic Disney animated films--starting high above the town and moving from macro to micro--get me. There's a catch in the throat and sometimes tears, and my husband doesn't quite understand it but respects the moment for me. So once again he patiently sat through my TiVoed recording of the Derby, this time where Lion Heart's lead around the turn is foreshadowed to fail as Smarty Jones sweeps behind just a split second after, and that mud-spattered chest pounds ahead of the clean one in a blur of hooves and awed roar of the crowd.
