These fires were both started by lightning, and although it means we all live with blackened hillsides for a bit, there's no doubt that there's too much old fuel up there, and the fires will clear things out (plus we've now got 10,000 acres of new morel territory next spring). The biggest problem is for the wild animals, whose habitats are so limited that the loss of big acreage in the wilderness areas severely limits their abilities to feed themselves, and in the case of the bears, leads to increased bear-human interactions (which too often lead to bears being put to death for becoming acclimated to human food sources).

I would hate to live where there is a risk of forest fires (no such danger here in Brittany where it's too wet to light a BBQ)and I watch the news reports with dread when they flare up

Nature sometimes benefits from the clearing of dead wood, I've heard, but when the fires are started deliberately then I despair of we humans

I hope the fires are soon extinguished and that no lives are lost before then
