[...] Despite Montana’s late April snow, Charlotte has been working hard behind the scenes to get her garden ready. Over at her LivingSmall blog, she posted about starting seeds indoors back in March as well as about the annual cleanup of last year’s remains. (Somehow, there’s always something left to clear just before spring planting…) She’s also spent some time reworking her compost system and is waiting for another thaw in order to build a two-bin system (”so far it’s just a pile of pallets in the back alley, and two still-frozen piles of compost-in-progress”) at the back of her lot so that it will be easier to turn the compost as it’s ready.
The peppers sound so yummy - but watch out for cross-pollination! Several houses ago I had a garden that was mostly tomatoes, peppers and herbs. I had a lovely long red pepper, semi-hot at best, from friends. It grew true for two years (via my seed-saving - so easy for peppers), and then the third year, whammo, got cross-pollinated with a jalapeno I planted too close by. Owie, was that a surprise.

We have a homemade rig in the basement, too, which I hope we'll finish this week so I can get busy planting. So far I have onions, leeks, broccoli, red celery and brussels sprouts. Next up lettuces (about 5 or 6 varieties) and the peppers, tomatoes and eggplants. Too many to name here, but I'll be posting about it on the weekend, I hope.

When I watered the trays this morning, the fragrance of the starting mix made me so happy. it's almost here!

Glad to hear about the Black Cherries -- I also have a tendency to forget between ordering and planting what the characteristics were that I wanted (clearly, I need a better notation system). I know that what I went for this year was early varieties and I've given up all hope of a tomato larger than say, a tennis ball (golf ball is more likely). Our season is just too short.

Ooooh, Black Cherry tomatoes! I grew those one year and loved them. Sounds like a great set of varieties for all the vegetables!
