Rain!

All day long. Some hail in mid-afternoon, but for the most part it’s been one of those days characterized by low-hanging clouds in the mountains, and nice cool, slow spring rain. I planted some potatoes this morning (dark of the moon is the time to plant root crops) and the rain this afternoon is exactly what my garden needed.

I'm a writer and editor based in Livingston, Montana. I moved to Livingston from the San Francisco Bay area in 2002 in search of affordable housing and a small community with a vibrant arts community. I found both. LivingSmall details my experience buying and renovating a house, building a garden, becoming a part of this community. It also chronicles my efforts to rebuild my life after the sudden death of my younger brother, and closest companion, Patrick in a car wreck.

  1. Lately I’ve been very interested in the effect of moon-phases on planting not just root crops, but everything. Things in general seem to be more perky, sooner, when they get planted at a rising, rather than waning moon. . . . .

  2. So retro, but I have been re-reading the Little House series to gather food ideas to connect with American History and Geography classes. Moon phases are mentioned regularly in these books. To induce an even further degree of separation, I am a high school math teacher and want the recipes for proportion lessons and the connection to spherical geometry. Next on the menu – Vanity Cakes. Yeah, we get to talk about vanity in math class.

And that makes me think about Anne Lamott and how she taught me to love my kinky frizzy blond hair in “Traveling Mercies”.

And THAT makes me think about how much I love to read about your brother and your dogs and your garden and your neighbors, and your job and your computers. Thanks for every new post.
