My latest piece is up over at Culinate. Go take a look!
And Michael Ruhlman has an interesting post about chefs and farmers that contains a whole bunch of links to a number of interesting pieces that have been floating around the blogosphere lately.
I'm a writer and editor based in Livingston, Montana. I moved to Livingston from the San Francisco Bay area in 2002 in search of affordable housing and a small community with a vibrant arts community. I found both.
LivingSmall details my experience buying and renovating a house, building a garden, becoming a part of this community. It also chronicles my efforts to rebuild my life after the sudden death of my younger brother, and closest companion, Patrick in a car wreck.
That’s an excellent article, Charlotte. Once I get caught up on my own blog this week, I intend to link to it… not to mention put it in the next Ethicurean Victory Garden update. 🙂
Thanks Jen!
When I was 10 we lived in a small town in Pennsylvania that was suburbanizing. Our housing development backed up on a farm. That farm didn’t grow anything edible, either — just corn for cows — and I was mystified by that, like you.
I’m in a house now with a 3′ x 3′ garden patch, so we’re getting vegetables from a CSA this year. Yesterday was our first delivery. The greens arrived as a plant, you know, with the roots attached. I put them in vases in the kitchen to await use. It’s a lovely thing … but we did have 2 caterpillars appear on the counter! Fresh food *is* labor intensive, whether you grow your own or buy it. You have to have a passion for it, I think, or it just won’t seem worth your while. I like to read your blog — and The Ethicurean, etc. — because it reminds me why I love growing things.
