Garden Update

So far, the hoop house is working really well. I’ve got seedlings coming up of broccoli rabe, komatsuna, spinach, and endive. The other hoop house also has sprouts, so far, it’s the Chinese cabbage (2 kinds) that are sprouting the best.

I also have some overwintered leeks that are starting to green up again, as well as parsley, chives, chervil, garlic chives and the indomitable lovage coming back up in the herb bed.

And this morning, the first of the daffodils bloomed, on the back side of the house, where it’s warmest. So I guess spring is on its way after all …

I'm a writer and editor based in Livingston, Montana. I moved to Livingston from the San Francisco Bay area in 2002 in search of affordable housing and a small community with a vibrant arts community. I found both. LivingSmall details my experience buying and renovating a house, building a garden, becoming a part of this community. It also chronicles my efforts to rebuild my life after the sudden death of my younger brother, and closest companion, Patrick in a car wreck.

  1. I didn’t mean to overwinter them — I just didn’t get around to pulling them before everything froze hard. And lo and behold, they’re coming back to life! I need to go hill them up actually, so I get more white part. I’ll probably do more this year, but they are kind of what my friend Jamie calls “pain in the ass” veggies — on the other hand, they’re so ridiculously expensive in the store that it’s probably worth it.

  2. I dug out most of mine a little while ago because they looked mushy. Maybe I should have given them more time in the ground. There’s still a few out there in a bed that didn’t get cleaned up last year. I think I’ll watch them and hope!
