Does anyone think it’s a coincidence that on the day that we’re about to swear in Samuel Alito, the man responsible for this statement: ”Why do you keep bringing up the fact that this case involves the strip search of a 10-year-old child?”(and a black girl child at that), that Coretta Scott King would choose to leave the planet? Does no one else see this as a Very Bad Sign?

Okay, here’s what I forgot — if you’ve been writing and editing on a computer screen all day, it is very difficult to read anything else in the evening. It was a long week in the trenches — life at the Big Corporation is kind of hectic, and I was finishing a freelance copyediting job at the same time. Taking on all these freelance jobs while working full time might not have been the smartest idea I every had, but at least I’ll have enough money to renovate my shameful bathroom when I get to the other side (there wasn’t…

Well, things have been very busy here at LivingSmall. Transferring all my info from the old computer to the new one didn’t go quite as seamlessly as one might have hoped, but nonetheless I am now up and running on my slickery new iBook — amazing what a keyboard unsullied by random pet hair and gunk feels like! Work at the Big Corporation has been busy, the garden is starting to do its thing, and then there’s a new development on the horizon which might involve a new movie option and I may be writing a screenplay of my novel.…

Again, sorry for the slow blogging — but I’m still being plagued by computer issues. So I sucked it up and ordered a new iBook yesterday — I don’t know what it is about Macs. I love them, I’ve been a Mac person for twenty years, but it seems like there’s a little clock that goes off inside after two years and two months, and while it’s not like the whole machine breaks down, it just slowly starts to do wonky things which necessitate hours of pointless fucking around and occasional head banging in despair. All this computer craziness has…

Sorry it’s been so quiet around here lately. I spent all last week fighting with my wireless connection — for some strange reason, I could get internet connectivity during the afternoons and evening, but not the morning?! It was maddening — and was one of those things that took up hours and hours of my time. Finally, I went to our local Mac guys, and we got things reconfigured, and so far, all has been well. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Those who already have access to reliable internet may use the best residential proxies to protect the privacy…

I’m embroiled in a some annoying work stuff that’s taking up all my time. I feel officially middle-aged now — I have a job I’m beginning to hate that I can’t afford to quit. Blogging will continue to be quiet as next week I’ll be in San Jose for meetings — the good news is that I’m going out to dinner with The Fabulous Pim one night, and on another night I’m having dinner with my beloved 75-year old aunt who is a nun, a practicing psychotherapist, and the best golfer in her age bracket in the state (you should…

We are all about the couch, the kleenex, the chicken soup here at LivingSmall. Thank goodness there was so much bad bad award show television this weekend. But it’s very sad, I missed the Spanish wine tasting on Saturday, that I was really looking forward to after Meg’s post on Spanish wines. But since I was all stuffy, couldn’t have tasted anything, felt dizzy, and really didn’t want to infect everyone else at the event, I stayed home. Tant pis. In other news, nearly a year and a half after being orphaned, Patrick’s dog Raymond (named after the late great…

Seems it happens to every blogger sooner or later — the hiatus. I’m taking some official time off from the blog. What I’ll miss is all of you — this blog provided me with an in-between space to practice my nonfiction voice — and in the months after Patrick died, it was good to have a semi-public space to do some writing. But now I’m working hard on the new book, and need to concentrate on it for a bit. I’ll always be grateful for the kind comments and all the support you’ve given me these past few months. I’ll…

Not much going on here at LivingSmall. It’s been raining, which is good, but which keeps garden news to a minimum. And I’m working on my new book, which means that all my writing energy is going that direction. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks with news from the much-anticipated Livingston Rodeo. Three days of rodeo right here over the weekend of the 4th. I love a rodeo.

Blogging has been slow lately, in part because I’m writing again. I’d been having a really difficult time figuring out how to proceed with this memoir-thing I’m writing. Memoir implies that the writer has some sense of perspective on events, or some inkling of what events “meant”. Since I’m still in the middle of this whole grief thing, I really didn’t feel that I had any idea of what my relationship with Patrick “meant” and hence, I was having a really tough time getting started. So, inspired by Andy Goldsworthy’s method of just going outside and making something every day,…
